我叫王爱玲,我上STEM中学八年级。For the past two years, I have
been learning Mandarin Chinese at the National Inventors Hall of
Fame STEM Middle School, and it has been one of the best experiences
I have had there. Every time when I walk in that class, I challenge
myself to walk out knowing something new, whether that be how to
write a new charter or a new piece of information about the culture;
as a result, I have acquired an abundance of knowledge about both
the Chinese language, but also the culture, regardless of that be
through the projects that I have done or through what Liang laoshi
teaches me.
One of the ways I have learned about the Chinese language and
culture is through the large number of projects we have done; for
example, when the class was on a unit about food and drink, the
project we had to make some of the traditional Chinese foods, such
as rice, dumplings, egg rolls, noodles, almond cookies, 大包, and many
more, ourselves. Personally, this was one of my favorites because it
not only gave me the opportunity to cook these foods, but we also
learned what each of the different foods meanings; for example, the
noodles represent longevity, and the dumplings represent wealth
because they look like Ancient China’s currency. Another one of the
projects that I learned a lot from was the Chinese New Year project.
During that project, we learned about the traditional dances that
are performed, what is eaten during that time of the year and why,
what people do to prepare for the New Year, and how people decorate
for the New Year; after we learned all that, we got the opportunity
to decorate our school from the knowledge that we have; thus, this
was a project that I learned a lot about the culture from. Overall,
I have gained an abundance of knowledge about Chinese culture
through the projects I have done.
The other way I have learned Chinese si from Liang laoshi. She has
helped me the most with the way that I learn Chinses because of the
way she teaches is very efficient; When we are learning a new unit,
she starts off with the unit by giving us a few of our new words a
day, each with pinyin and gestures to help us remember the words.
Eventually, we would reach the point where we would have learned all
of the new words, and after that, she would slowly strip away the
pinyin and start showing us characters only; at that point, we would
now know all of our new words. Additionally, once the unit is over,
we are still constantly reviewing the words every day. This method
of teaching has helped me tremendously because there would never be
a moment where we would learn something and then move on to the next
topic without touching on what we learned again. In conclusion, the
way that Liang laoshi teaches us is how I learn the Chinese
language.
I have learned a great deal about the Chinese culture and language
while with Liang laoshi. Not only has Liang laoshi been teaching me
about eh culture just in class, but also out of class with the
projects that we do. If it was not for her and the opportunities
that she has given us both in and out of class, and without her, I
would not have the amazing experience I am having right now.
Overall, I have learned a lot about Chinese culture thanks to
everything that Liang laoshi has taught me. 王爱玲
