Ewha’s 125th Anniversary Concert
Date: August 27th, 2011, 8PM
Place: Kulas Hall, Cleveland Institute of Music
Sponsored by: Ewha Girls’ High School Alumnae Association of North
America
What is Ewha?
Ewha means ‘pear blossom’ in Korean, and is the name of the very
first Korean girls’ school which was originated 125 years ago by two
foresighted women who lived in Northeast Ohio. They were Mrs. Mary
Scranton who was the founder of Ewha, and Mrs. Lucinda Baldwin who
was the very first donor of the school with $88. They were followed
by two more principals from Ohio; the second principal, Ms. Louisa
Rothweiler and the forth, Ms. Lulu Frey. Under their leadership from
1890 to 1921, Ewha flourished even more.
125 years ago, Mrs. Mary Scranton started Ewha with one abandoned
young girl. Since then Ewha has evolved with time, but still
remained as Ewha Girls’ High School in her original historical
campus. In 1935 it branched out to reach more women becoming a
college, which is now known as Ewha Womans University. Today, Ewha
has grown dramatically, and is now represented in about 20,000 high
school and university female students.
This Ewha’s 125th Anniversary concert is being held to celebrate the
beautiful 125 years history of Ewha which began right here in
Northeast Ohio, and commemorate these two foresighted women whose
vision and determination were to educate Far East Korean Women of
late 1880’s.
This year, the proceeds of this concert will be partly used in
providing scholarships to the students of Ravenna, Ohio as a token
of our deepest gratitude to this region. The rest will assist in
providing scholarships to students who are talented, deserving but
the most unfortunate students in Korea, India, Pakistan and northern
China bordering North Korea.
Please join in with us for this wonderful event.
