Mission Statement
Rainey Institute is dedicated to positive change for Greater
Cleveland’s youth and families through education and participation
in the performing and visual arts.
Vision Statement
Rainey Institute develops self-esteem, humanitarian values, work
ethic, life skills, and hope in a new future for all program
participants.
Rainey Institute provides arts education programs for children in
Cleveland. Rainey has been serving this community since 1904.
Rainey’s programs in music, dance, drama, and visual arts are
delivered to children through an Afterschool Program, Saturday
classes and private lessons, performing groups, Teen Leadership
Group and Summer Camp Program. Rainey also provides afterschool
programs in several Cleveland schools and community settings. Rainey
currently serves 650 children per year and keeps children engaged in
positive, enriching arts activities and away from gangs, drugs,
crime, teenage pregnancy and other urban challenges.
Rainey Institute is where the arts change lives. Located in the
Hough neighborhood of Cleveland, one of the poorest communities in
one of America’s poorest cities, Rainey’s students range in age from
3 to 18. Many come from single parent households and are living at,
or below the poverty level. Most of our students attend the
Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
Rainey currently provides six primary programs:
The After School Program runs Monday through Friday from 3:00 to
6:00 throughout the school year. This program provides homework
help, arts instruction, and a healthy snack.
El Sistema@Rainey will provide daily orchestra music instruction to
students in grades 1-4, Monday through Friday, in the After School
Program. Students will perform on stage at Severance Hall.
The Saturday Arts Program has group classes in music, dance,
theater, visual arts, and sewing, and private instrument and voice
lessons.
The Summer Arts Day Camp is a six-week program, Monday through
Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Summer campers are immersed in all of
the arts disciplines, as well as classes in reading, writing, and
math. Summer Camp culminates with an arts festival for the
community.
The Rainey Theater Program is a yearlong program, which integrates
music, dance, drama and visual arts to produce musical theater
performances by students.
The Teen Leadership Program provides leadership training,
life-skills training, community service opportunities, attendance at
professional arts and cultural events, and visits to college
campuses.
Rainey also provides After School Programs in several Cleveland
schools and community settings.
Rainey Institute provides the continuity that children need to grow
up, competing successfully in a transforming world. While combating
the harmful effects of poverty, we offer engaging, structured
activities, and academic and social enrichment, all is a safe,
caring environment. As such, we provide a valuable community
resource to all neighboring residents. We also fill the gaps caused
by the reduction of arts education in many Cleveland schools.
Rainey Institute recently moved 4 blocks down E. 55th Street to The
Alexander McAfee Arts Education Center, which replaced its original
home for the past 107 years. The new facility will enable Rainey to
ultimately double the number of children served to 1,300.
Out programs directly address documented community needs. The City
of Cleveland faces extraordinary challenges for its inner city
youth, and the importance of the arts for successful child
development has been consistently recognized. We thank you for this
