COLUMBUS-State Representative Diane V. Grendell (R-Chesterland)
welcomed University Hospital’s renowned Dr. Xuan Huang and her
daughter Wendi Song to the Ohio Statehouse today. Dr. Huang and
Wendi were invited to spend the day with Representative Grendell and
experience state government.
Representative Grendell brought both Dr. Huang and Wendi along to
Health Committee, with the House Session following soon after. Dr.
Huang and Wendi were honored at session for their establishment of
the UH Geauga Medical Cancer Patient Support Fund. Earlier this
year, they raised close to $10,000 in the first half of the year
that will be used to support the medical center’s cancer patients.
“I was honored to have such a professional, vivacious woman and her
intelligent daughter with me to observe the process at work,” said
Representative Grendell.Wendi Song
The most interesting part for this visit for me was listening to and
watching the House Session. I really enjoyed watching the
Representatives vote on the different bills, and watching them go
through the procedures that I had learned in my AP government class
really helped me understand the process.?I enjoyed being in the
Health Committee meeting and listening to the questioning of the
witnesses by the Representatives. The witnesses were all prepared
and ready to defend their points, and the Representatives asked
really insightful questions. It was just really exciting hearing
about the issue and also being able to relate to it.??
It was during the Health Committee meeting that I learned about the
proposed bill regarding nurse practitioners. It proposed for certain
practices, a loosening of regulations for nurse practitioners
regarding collaborations with physicians, and I recognized some of
the problems they were discussing over. As my mom is a physician who
has experience interacting with nurse practitioner, I could
understand the issue and relate to it, because it directly concerned
the job security and practices of doctors, and I had previously
never realized this issue between NPs and physicians. It was through
this bill that I learned both about the issue and the procedures for
witnesses and questionings.
I am grateful to the opportunity of spending time with
Representatives Diane Grendell and get to learn things I would not
be able to learn in classroom. I will continue indulge myself in the
field of my interest. This visit fortified my interest in political
science and the decision of choosing it as my major in college. |
