作爲一個在華人極少的環境里長大的、土生土長的俄亥俄人,我小的時候接觸到的中國文化並不多,主要只有父母偶爾點的中國菜。因此,我進入大學開始學習中文時,朋友和家人都很困惑地想知道我爲何想學習中文,如何能夠學會一個似乎是世界上最難學的、有無限字母的外語。學了六年多的中文,並獲得了俄亥俄州立大學中文旗艦的碩士學位,我的感受一直沒有改變:理解中國社會和文化各方面的人才對建立中美關係具有重大的作用。但關鍵的是,由於任何國家的歷史和文化演變是與其語言分不開的,所以像我這樣的一知半解的學生必須學習中文才能夠深入地瞭解中國。簡言之,學會中文是打開中國社會,促進中美關係和諧發展最關鍵的鑰匙。
Americans who understand Chinese culture and society play an
extremely important role in developing U.S.-China relations. Yet
because any country’s history and cultural evolution are inseparable
from its language, students like myself with little background
knowledge of the area must first study in the Chinese language in
order to ever truly understand China. A mastery of Chinese is the
key to unlocking Chinese society and the foundation for advancing
U.S.-China relations. |
