HELLMAN/HAMMETT GRANT AWARDED TO HUANG XIANG
|
|
HUANG XIANG was the first exiled writer to be given sanctuary in
Pittsburgh as part of the City of Asylum/Pittsburgh program. He was
the hosted writer-in-residence from November 2004 until November
2006. He continues to live and write in Pittsburgh.
Mr. Huang is acclaimed as one of the
greatest poets of 20th century China. Known as “China’s Walt
Whitman.” He is also a heroic human rights figure, who was
frequently imprisoned and tortured in China. He has been described
as “a poet on fire, a human torch who burns as a lamp of freedom and
enlightenment.” Mr. Huang has become widely known for painting
Chinese calligraphies of several of his poems onto the fa?ade of a
house. Known as “House Poem,” it has become a much-visited landmark
on the North Side.
Mr. Huang was also awarded a Hellman/Hammett
Grant in 1994, before receiving political asylum in the United
States.
HELLMAN/HAMMETT grants are awarded to
writers who have been targets of political persecution. In addition
to providing financial assistance to individuals, the grants focus
attention on the problem of repression and censorship around the
world. The writers honored this year have been harassed, assaulted,
indicted, jailed on trumped up charges, or tortured merely for
providing information from nongovernmental sources. In addition to
those who are directly targeted, many others are forced to practice
self-censorship.
The grant program began in 1989 when
the American playwright Lillian Hellman willed that her estate be
used to assist writers in financial need as a result of expressing
their views. Ms. Hellman was prompted by her experiences during the
anti-communist hysteria of the 1950s, when she and her long-time
companion the writer Dashiell Hammett were questioned by U.S.
Congressional committees about their political beliefs and
affiliations.

零是在空隙之間,

如在每一剎哪之間嗎?
零, 到底是什麼?
到底,什麼是零?
這倒像個公案!
什麼是空無?!
哦, 零是潜在力,
零可以是任何一物,
零可以是所有一切,
假如我知道什麼是零,
我就會知道什麼是潜在力!
那麼, 什麼是潜在力呢?
潜在力是否就在思緒之間?
喔, 我又回到開始的出發點!
大概這就是零吧?
