Cleveland, Ohio - September 19, 2007... Graceful,
charming and high-spirited international sensation 12 Girls Band
brings their innovative blend of East and West, traditional and pop to
the Allen Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio on October 29, 2007 as part of
their first major US tour. Straight from their successful “Live from
Shanghai” special on PBS, 12 Girls Band will entertain with selections
that fuse the ancient traditions of Chinese classical and folk music
with the sounds of western, pop, classical and jazz.
The musicians perform on an array of ancient and fascinating Chinese
instruments including the stringed and bowed erhu; the pear-shaped
plucked lute called a pipa; the guzheng zither; the yangqin hammered
dulcimer; a transverse flute called the dizi and the vertical flute
known as the xaio; a single-stringed zither called the duxiaquin; and
the halusi, a three-piped gourd flute.
Musical selections include a multi-cultural array of songs and pieces
from beloved Chinese traditional and folk tunes such as “High
Mountain, Floating Water” to pop hits including Sting’s “Fragile” and
Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”, Dave Brubeck’s jazz masterpiece
“Take 5”, Handel’s Music for Royal Fireworks and Puccini’s “Nessun
Dorma” from the opera Turandot. Many selections are from their latest
CD “Shanghi” which was No. 1 on Billboard’s World Music Album chart.
12 Girls Band was formed in 2001 after a rigorous audition process of
musicians who studied music at the most prestigious conservatories
across the People’s Republic of China. They represent an incarnation
of the YUE Fang, which were all-female ensembles that played the royal
courts of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE). The number twelve has
important significance in Chinese culture, astrology and numerology;
however there are actually thirteen musicians in the band so that
there is always a substitute player available.
