CIM CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
TAKES PLACE DECEMBER 1-7

CIM presents its annual Chamber
Music Festival from December 1 through December 7 in University
Circle. The festival will feature concerts and master classes by the
Tokyo String Quartet, as well as concerts by CIM students and faculty
featuring string and string/piano, brass and woodwind chamber music.
Participation of the Tokyo Quartet is made possible in part by the Dr.
Sydney and Gussie B. Klein CIM Chamber Music Ensemble Fund, and in
collaboration with the Cleveland Chamber Music Society.
On Friday, December 1 at 8:00 p.m., CIM's
Quartet-in-Residence, the Cavani String Quartet, and pianist Sergei
Babayan will present a recital featuring works by Dmitri Shostakovich.
The program, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the composer's
birth, is presented in honor of Mid-West Forge Corporation. Works to
be performed include String Quartet No. 1 in F-sharp Minor, Op. 108;
String Quartet 8 in C Minor, Op. 110 and Quintet for Two Violins,
Viola, Cello and Piano in G Minor, Op. 57.
On Saturday, December 2 at 4:00 p.m., the Cavani
String Quartet will coach select high school string quartets in a
master class that is free and open to the public.
On Monday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m., the Tokyo
String Quartet will coach CIM student ensembles until 10:00 p.m., in
master classes that are free and open to the public.
The Chamber Music Festival continues on Monday,
December 4 at 8:00 p.m., with a performance of the CIM Woodwind
Ensembles, directed by oboist Elizabeth Camus. Fellow Cleveland
Orchestra members, Bassoonist Barrick Stees and flutist Joshua Smith,
will serve as coaches. The concert, featuring works by Maurice Ravel,
Elliott Carter, August Klughardt and W.A. Mozart, is free and open to
the public.
On Tuesday, December 5 at 8:00 p.m., Richard
Stout will direct the CIM Brass Ensembles in a concert that is free
and open to the public.
The Tokyo String Quartet will perform at Fairmount
Temple on Tuesday, December 5 at 8:00 p.m.. The concert, presented in
collaboration with the Cleveland Chamber Music Society, will feature
works by Mozart, Lera Auerbach and Schumann. Tickets are $30, $28 for

On Wednesday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m., students
enrolled in the Intensive String Quartet Seminar at CIM will present a
Gala Concert featuring the string quartets of Franz Joseph Haydn. This
concert is free and open to the public.
The Chamber Music Festival will conclude with a
marathon on Thursday, December 7 at 7:00 p.m. Quartets, quintets and
trios will perform simultaneously in three locations and refreshments
will be served to the audience during breaks. This is a great
opportunity for chamber music aficionados to spend an evening and
build their own program of favorite works. The concert is free and
open to the public.
