CMA Presents an Astounding Evening of Filipino Music and Dance on Oct. 18

An enchanting group of dancers from the Philippines engaging, graceful, and disciplined CLEVELAND (September 26, 2006) a The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) proudly presents the internationally renowned Bayanihan: Philippine National Dance Company at the Cleveland Masonic and Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, 7:30 p.m. Through brightly colored costumes and dynamic performances, the 45-member company celebrates one of the worlds richest music and dance traditions. This performance is part of CMA's acclaimed VIVA & Gala Around Town concert series.

Bayanihan, the first non-American dance company to take the stage at New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, demonstrates the charm of their nation of 7,000 islands by celebrating the diverse indigenous, Chinese, Spanish, and Islamic influences that have shaped the Philippine culture. Brilliant costumes, graceful dancers and exacted choreography create astonishing performances deemed by Susan Rhodes of the Manchester Evening News (U.K),One of the most vivid and beautiful sights to grace the stage.With a diverse repertory, this thrilling company shares their heritage through uplifting songs and dances representing traditions of their homeland.
Bayanihan was founded in 1957 by Dr. Helena Z. Benitez to preserve Filipino art forms and turn cultural traditions into theatrical art, and also to promote international understanding through performances abroad. The nameBayanihan comes from the ancient Filipino tradition of the same name, which signifies working together for the common good. Their debut performance in the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, entitled Glimpses of Philippine Culture through Music and Dance, was hailed as the highlight of the fair and was televised across the United States. One year later, Bayanihan made its Broadway debut at the Winter Garden Theater, making the company the first Filipino group to perform on Broadway. The company received unanimous acclaim from New York critics, and garnered the title Cinderella of Dance Theater.
