In April 2009 the Ohio Commission on Minority Health,
The City of Cleveland, the Cleveland Department of Public Health and
the Cleveland Office of Minority Health will promote hundreds of
projects throughout Cleveland that will benefit thousands of
citizens as they participate in Minority Health Month activities in
2009.
In 1986, Ohio became the first state in the nation to
examine health disparities in the African American, Latino/Hispanic,
Asian & Pacific Islander and Native American communities. This work
performed by the Governors Task Force on Black and Minority Health
resulted in the creation of the Commission in 1987. Today, this work
has been emulated by the creation of 47 State Offices of Minority
Health. In 2004 the Commission contracted with the U S Department of
Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health to serve as the
lead agency in the creation of the National Association of State
Offices of Minority Health.
Another historic first for the Commission was the creation of
Minority Health Month in April 1989. Minority Health Month is
celebrated annually in Ohio and became a national awareness campaign
in April 2001.
The Ohio Commission of Minority Health recently added another first
in the creation of Local Office of Minority Health in six major
cities in Ohio including Cleveland. “Minorities in Cleveland and
across the country continue to face higher rates of disease, illness
and death” explained Karen Butler, Health Commissioner of the
Cleveland Department of Public Health. “Minority Health Month helps
us to raise awareness about the inequities that exist and to draw
attention to the services and resources available to Clevelanders.
This month’s celebration represents Mayor Frank Jackson’s ongoing
work to promote health, prevent disease and address health disparity
in our community as part of his Urban Health Agenda.”
Minority Health Month was designed to be a 30 day, high
visibility wellness campaign. Events are culturally appropriate and
located in minority communities. Activities are planned and
delivered by community based agencies and organizations serving
thousands of Ohioans.
In addition to local Minority Health Month events the
Commission will also fund a Local Kickoff Reception on April 1, 2009
at Café Sausalito at the Galleria at Erieview from 4:30pm–7:00pm.
