China Awards Cleveland State University the
Confucius Institute |
|
|
On January 18, 2008, His Excellency Wenzhong Zhou, Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to
the United States, announced in his speech at the Cleveland City Club
that Cleveland State University (CSU) will be home to a Confucius
Institute. This welcomed development means that CSU will receive an
initial grant of $120,000 from the Chinese government to establish the
institute, and will be eligible to apply for additional funding in the
future. CSU will partner with Capital University of Economics and
Business in Beijing, China in this endeavor.
A "Confucius Institute" is a non-profit public
institute with a mission of promoting Chinese language and culture and
supporting local Chinese teaching. In the case of CSU, the Confucius
Institute will be focused on five specific tasks. The Institute will
prepare teachers of Chinese and help these teachers find and succeed
at jobs in NE Ohio. It will work with school districts in this areas
(specifically Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Shaker Heights,
and Cleveland Heights/University Heights) to create an international
school with a strong focus on Chinese. A fourth task will be
conducting student and faculty exchanges between Ohio and China; and
the final task will be supporting Chinese professionals and businesses
locating in Ohio while helping Ohio companies to do business with
China.
This latest development builds on a series of
initiatives with China undertaken by CSU’s College of Education and
Human Services under the leadership of Dean James McLoughlin,
spearheaded by Dr. Lih-Ching Chen Wang with the support of George
Burke, CSU’s Director of the Center for International Services and
Programs. These initiatives include co-hosting an international
conference in Shanghai, China and agreements to offer joint
undergraduate/graduate degree programs with a number of Chinese
universities. CSU President Michael Schwartz and Provost Mary Jane
Saunders have voiced their support for the Confucius Institute, noting
that it demonstrates academic excellence and engagement in regional
economic revitalization, two dual emphases of the university. Chairman
Anthony Yen, a prominent Cleveland businessman in international trade,
is a member of CSU’s visiting committee and was instrumental in
shaping and supporting CSU’s proposal to house a Confucius Institute.
The Confucius Institute will be directed by Dr. Lih-Ching Chen Wang.
CSU would like to thank the entire Chinese
community – indeed, the Asian community – in NE Ohio for providing the
basis of support which has made the Confucius Institute possible. In
the future, we hope that we can count on your assistance and continued
support as we move to further expand programs promoting Chinese
language, culture, and commerce in our area. If you have questions
about the Confucius Institute, please contact Dr. Lih-Ching Chen Wang
via email: ci@csuohio.edu or ci88@csuohio.edu. |
