DID YOU KNOW Lew Katz took the Cleveland Board of Education to court
in a successful effort which prevented teachers from being forced to
leave their classrooms because they became pregnant? Before the
landmark LaFleur case was eventually settled in the Supreme Court,
Cleveland teachers were dismissed from their jobs as they began to
show evidence of their pregnancies. Students were often taught by a
series of substitutes for the remainder of the school term.
When the case was filed in federal court, the judge warmly welcomed
the attorney for the school board. At the same conference, he turned
to the plaintiffs' attorney and growled, "Why do you waste the federal
court’s time with such frivolous lawsuits?"
Attorney Jane Picker, an advisor to the teachers, feared a continuing
hostile attitude throughout the trial. She turned to Lew Katz, a
professor with a reputation as a stickler for equal rights for all.
Lew agreed to become involved. The case prevailed in the U.S. Court of
Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.
After hearing of Lew's Congressional race, Jo Carol LaFleur recently
reconnected with Lew and reminisced about the case and its impact on
today's women.
