Thanks to Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Meredith Turner and Woodmere
Village Mayor Ben Holbert’s invitations, I attended the Inaugural
Juneteenth Celebration in Woodmere with Jenny! Now Juneteenth is an
official federal holiday, honoring the emancipation of enslaved
people in the United States, offering opportunities to reflect and
to celebrate. The term Juneteenth is a blend of the words June and
nineteenth, is the day that commemorates the end of slavery in the
confederate states, the day in 1865 when the Union Army established
authority over Texas. This year, Juneteenth is formally recognized
on today, June 17. For preparing to participate this event, Jenny
and I shopped our African outfits in Larchmere last Sunday. People
in the celebration party cheered our festival looks!! To honor the
celebration of freedom, people in the party together are watching
“Summer of Soul”, a documentary film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural
Festival, which took place on six Sundays between June 29!and August
24 at Mount Morris Park in Harlem. Performers such as Stevie Wonder,
Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, the 5th Dimension, the Staple Singers,
Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mavis Staples, Blinky Williams, Sly and
the Family Stone, and the Chambers Brothers. In 2022, “Summer of
Soul” won stellar awards, Academy Award for Best Documentary, BAFTA
Award for Best Documentary, Independent Spirit Award for Best
Documentary, Grammy Award for Best Music Film, Producers Guild of
America Award for Best Documentary Motion Picture, Satellite Award
for Best Motion Picture,AFI Special Award, Peabody Award, Eddie
Awards for Best edited Documentary. If I hadn’t watched this
documentary film this evening, I would miss the beats of American
culture and history.
