Last Autumn, United States Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that there would be a number
of fee changes for 2020. The fee seeing the most significant change
is the fee for the Naturalization application. This fee will rise
from $640 to $1170. There is also an $85 biometrics fee as part of
the naturalization process that will not increase.
There is no set date for when fee changes will go into place, but
it could happen as soon as the end of the month. To avoid this
increased expense, it is important that anyone who has been looking
to apply for naturalization begin the process ASAP. Fortunately, the
N-400 application can now be filled out either in person or online
using the USCIS website. If the fees are too burdensome, you can
apply for a Naturalization Fee Reduction if you are 150%- 200% below
the poverty level, which reduces the fee by 50% or $320. There is no
word yet as to whether or not this reduction waiver will be
available once the increased fee change goes into effect. .
