Cleveland Asian Festival Volunteer Open House and OCAGC Census Project

By Wayne Wong

As AsiaTown Cleveland continues to grow, there are many opportunities for supporters to volunteer and also have fun. On Sunday February 23 two events were held back-to-back with many common supporters that stayed for both events to promote the Census and to promote the Cleveland Asian Festival.
First was a meet-up and Census project by members of OCA Asian Pacific American Advocates, Greater Cleveland Chapter. The group met at Ball Ball Waffle for a snack and informal member meeting. The group then went to tables setup in Asia Plaza and took on the task of assembling about 1000 "Census Fans" that will be distributed at local events to promote the upcoming United States Census on April 1 through July 31, 2020. OCA is stressing the importance of everyone, especially the typically underrepresented immigrant community, to take part in the census. It is for everyone, not just citizens, and the fans printed in English and several Asian languages state "Your neighborhood gets $10,000+ for each person counted." The group project was organized by President Lisa Wong and was supported by most of the OCAGC board members including Wayne Wong, Johnny Wu, David Huang, Steven Jung, Vera Boggs, and Rohit Shastry as well as other OCA members.
Afterwards, The Cleveland Asian Festival (CAF) held a Volunteer Open House in the middle of Asia Plaza to promote the 11th annual festival planned for May 16-17,2020, to be held in the area surrounding the plaza at E.27th and Payne Avenue. The open house consisted of each CAF committee having a table to promote the work done by the committee in order to garner interest in the festival and also recruit potential volunteers. Organized by the CAF Co-Producers Lisa Wong and Johnny Wu, the event got the attention of many who were at the plaza for late lunch or shopping. The festival attracts over 40,000 attendees each weekend and is powered primarily by volunteers with much of the pre-event work done by seven committees: Activities, Finance/Contracts, Health Pavilion, Marketing, Performance, Vendor, and Volunteer. With two performance stages, over 20 food vendors, over 100 exhibitors and vendors, a health pavilion, an activities area, and free AsiaTown trolley tours, the Cleveland Asian Festival is the Best Showcase of Asian culture and cuisine in Ohio. See you there!
