Preparing for the 10th Cleveland Asian Festival May 18-19

By Wayne Wong

Join more than 45,000 at the Best Showcase of Asian Food & Culture at the 10th Cleveland Asian Festival May 18th & 19th! We are celebrating a decade of bringing Asia to Cleveland, with 20+ authentic Asian food and drink vendors, 2 stages of wonderful cultural performances and martial arts, over 100 vendors and exhibitors, and more! Since the inception of the festival, located at E. 27th and Payne Avenue, this volunteer-powered event has helped to expand awareness and help drive the growth of the AsiaTown neighborhood, and contributed to the rich diversity of Cleveland.
This year, besides the fantastic Asian cuisines, which always ranks at the top of everyone's list, some must-see performances/events include: International Act - The Shaolin Gung Fu Performance Team, from Henan China; Kwan Lion Dance; OCA Cleveland Dragon Dance; Asian Pop Dance competition that has $3500 prizes available for the top three winners; Egg roll speed eating contest, and Colors of Asian Fashion Show. The Activities pavilion will also have some great games and activities for all ages. The AsiaTown tours will be Saturday May 18 from 1:00-5:00 p.m., and Sunday May 19 from 1:00-4:00. Free health screenings are also available in the Health Pavilion. And to lock in those memories and share the fun, use our several photo stations and post your photos on social media with hashtag #CAF2019CLE.
This year, the Festival is being produced by co-founders Lisa Wong and Johnny Wu, working with the Executive Committee members Vi Huynh, Mike Mendoza, Wayne Wong, and Debbie Yue. They are joined by dozens of committee members, and over a hundred other day-volunteers. The festival weekend culminates months of preparations, including that of the many performers. Quite a few of the festival leadership are also on the OCA Cleveland Dragon Dance team. The Dragon Team was born in 2014 when OCA Cleveland leaders wanted to bring this tradition to NE Ohio and specifically to support the Cleveland Asian Festival. The team had its first public performance at the festival that year and has been at each event since. Other preparations include the orientation of the many vital day-of volunteers. To prepare, each volunteer must attend one of three Volunteer Orientations. We are ready! See you at the Festival!

Thanks!
Wayne.
