First
I want to say thank you to everyone who is here today, and I want to
talk a little about Andrew Yang! I first met Andrew over 5 years
ago. It was just as Venture for America was beginning to take shape
from an idea to actual students imagining their futures around it. I
was one of those students. As we talked about the fellowship, I
began to understand the vision Andrew had for the program, and I
knew even back then that it was morethan just placing college
students at startups in cities that are struggle to attract talent
like my hometown Detroit and my current city Cleveland. Andrew’s
vision was about shedding light on pathways that had always existed
but were hidden and often less travelled. Venture for America
represents one program trying to solve three difficult problems. The
problem of: * smart graduates feeling that opportunities are only in
New York or San Franscisco in fields like finance or tech
* startups outside of the valley feeling ignored and unable to
attract top talent
* citiesthat don’t necessarily have a readily available startup
environments or strategies for attracting and retaining talent.
Those were huge meaty problems in 2012. But Andrew took them on.
Venture for American continues to make strides in those areas. I am
standing up here, because I believe our country is currently facing
huge meaty problems, and we need people who aren’t afraid to take
them on. Andrew is one of them. He doesn’t have the typical resume
you might expect for someone running for president (neither does our
current president for that matter). But he has the know how of
seeking out solutions, building cooperation, and the right ideas
about how to approach some of the hardest problems the US is facing
and will face.
I spend a lot of time thinking about the type of country I want to
live in, and I realized that my hope are more “normal” than not. I
want a country that provides education and opportunity to everyone,
that makes sure that people are treated fairly, and protects people
who need it. These are not radical or partisan ideas. But what is
radical, is the thought that they are achievable and in our
lifetime. The truth is there are things that work and things that
don’t, we just need a leader who is willing to look at reality and
choose the policies that leave us better off. Those policies are not
unknown, there are solutions to issues gun violence, public
transportation, education, and health care. We need to be brave, we
need to try things that we haven’t in the past. We need to embrace
innovation and FACT and we need a leader who will do the same. I
believe that Andrew can do that and that is why I am supporting him
in his run for President.
