The Cleveland Metropark Zoo officially opened
the new Asian Highlands, a state of the art exhibit and home to amur
and snow leopards, red pandas, and takin. The Ribbon Cutting took
place on Tuesday, June 12th and featured local performers Janice Liu
playing the Erhu, John Cosma demonstrating Hsing-Yi/Tai Chi, Jim
Holt practicing Baqua, Bharathnatyam southern Indian Dance by Deepa
Manikandan, Blooming Flower - Paj Tawg Tshiab Hmong Dancers, and OCA
Dragon Dance Drummer Alex Wong.
For the Grand Opening weekends, the Zoo also featured a variety of
Asian performances and exhibitor tables from the local community
with help from community leaders Oanh Powell, Asim Datta, Lisa Wong,
and Johnny Wu. Performers included ShoJoJi Japanese Dancers, Janice
Liu on Erhu, LingYun Rising Star Gymnastics School, Aikiki - Aikido
Marital Art Demonstrations, Shaolin Institute, Yo-Yo by Jumario
Simmons, Westlake Chinese School, Spartan Bhangra, Karate Institute
of Mentor, and a special Father's Day performance and parade by the
OCA Greater Cleveland Dragon Dance Team.
Exhibitors included Vietnamese Cultural Garden, Cleveland Aikikai,
Shaolin Institute, Greater Cleveland Chinese Chamber of Commerce,
Cleveland Chinese Entrepreneurs Association, Confucius Institute at
Cleveland State University, MotivAsians for Cleveland, Asian
Services In Action, and OCA Asian Pacific American Advocates Greater
Cleveland Chapter.
The Zoo also announced that they will be hosting the Asian Lantern
Festival that will take place in the evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 10
p.m. Thursdays through Sunday from July 19 to August 19, 2018.
