Cleveland, OH - Asian Services In Action, Inc.
(ASIA) celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) this
May to recognize the history, diversity and achievements of
generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
“The Asian Pacific American community is one of the most culturally
and linguistically diverse groups in Northeast Ohio,” said ASIA CEO
Michael Byun. “May is a time to recognize our communities
achievements and contributions as we continue to shape the history
and culture of the United States.” Asian Pacific American Heritage
Week was first established in 1978 through a joint congressional
resolution. The first 10 days of May were chosen to coincide with
two two important milestones in Asian/Pacific American history - the
arrival in the U.S. of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843
and the contributions of Chinese workers to the building of the
transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Fourteen years later,
Congress expanded the week to a month-long celebration.
For over 20 years, ASIA has served the AAPI community in Ohio as the
leading organization providing culturally and linguistically
relevant health and human services to Asian Americans and Pacific
Islanders (AAPIs), and others who face cultural barriers. During
