清華因緣:

黃秉乾院士傳序

黃院士伉儷情深,尤其是中央硏究院有史以來,極少見的院士伉儷 (迄今一共僅三對),也是第一對從台灣大學出生的夫妻檔;黃院士形容夫人: great
daughter, good sister, sweet lover, devoted wife, loving mother,
dedicated scientist, caring teacher, lasting friend and a trusting
colleague.
黃周汝吉院士說:「五十年之硏究生涯轉瞬即逝,唯吾夫婦情趣依舊,深感晩年新生命的珍貴。」讓人想起「只羨鴛鴦不羨仙」千古名句。
本書對黃院士的精彩生平與志業,有很生動的描述,但如黃院士所願,重點放在清華,可以黃院士清華情來形容,而以「清華因緣」為名甚為適切;黃院士強調,放眼兩岸以及中國的歷史發展,清華旣是典範,也是特例。二十餘年來,黃院士高度認同清華人,非但意欲接續清華的優良人文傳統,且發願有以開創,寄望清華在西學東漸大潮中繼承過去的燦爛,且能再現高潮;他於1985年即參與清華新成立的生命科學諮詢委員會,1993-97年擔任清華生科院院長,從獨創了中文「生命科學」的新名詞,到籌備以及創立生命科學院的規劃,從課程設計與羅致、聘用人才,有很長的一段時間用心投入與參與,集中心力推動生命科學,憑藉前此已然奠定的深厚根基,開拓恢弘遼闊的景觀;黃院士雖於1996年返美任敎,但持續關注清華,始終保持密切聯繫,至今仍擔任清華大學校務諮詢委員,清華生命科學院諮詢委員兼主席。
黃院士伉儷雖大半時間身居海外,除個人取得的學術成就外,近半個世紀以來,及長期承擔者引介生命科學在台灣生根和發展的使命與抱負;他以清華國學院導師之一的陳寅恪肯定另一位導師王國維治學與文化情操雋語:「士之讀書治學,蓋將以脫心志於俗諦之桎梏,眞理得以發揚,」引為圭臬。黃周汝吉院士曾說:「我們夫妻要說對台灣有甚麼貢獻,那就是幫忙建立分子生物學。」黃院士長期以來以敎育為志趣,在校園裡和年輕同學相處也是他的樂趣。他強調Pedagogy
is more than
teaching,即敎學不止在課堂傳道授業。他在大一開「生命科學導論」,且連開四年。他很重視與學生的互動,關懷學生是否能在清華園陶冶心智而成材;他說:
「清華人應具備的知識菁英內涵,非僅具有學術價値,且能淑世,有以貢獻於人類社會。」「在我任敎那幾年,同學都知道。念清華生科系不是為了就業,而是超越就業。」他對初進清華的新鮮人,都會強調要能高度認同清華的傳統,也就是文理會通。「讀書就是要能開創個人的選擇空間,樂於個人選擇的工作,成功就是懂得選擇。」他學生的座右銘即是「to
be able to choose, and happy with what you have
chosen.」他很費心思,加強師生互動,也很珍惜師生關係,此外,他致力於推動兵役制度改革,突破限制,使清華學子在求學期間,得以在暑期出國交流,爭取生科系役男分發,改革替代役,也打開了從義務役逐漸走向募兵制的思維,貢獻許多心力,居功厥偉。
最難得的是,黃院士交卸生命科學院長職務後,從不認為他已從清華退休,而是持續關懷清華,樂於接受諮詢,也勇於提出意見,諸如建立清華學生住宿學院;推動並促成編寫「生命科學與工程」敎科書;為提陞學生競爭力,主張強化英語能力,推動醫學文學閱讀;參與催生醫學科學系,主張再生科院以人的科學為核心繼續設立第三個學系,處理人與生態以及人體內為數更多的生命體如各種細菌;對靑華大學與交通大學合併持保留意見,但在清華和交大之間搭起了生命科學橋樑。清華園依然經常看得到他的身影,積極參與校務、院務諮詢、兩岸清華互動、合開課程、學生座談、發表演講,可以說黃院士人依然在清華,心思更用在清華。
清華在黃院士早年記憶裡,是長輩最推崇,同學們相與欽羨的學術殿堂;他體認中國近代史幾個最重要環節,都與清華息息相關,也構成中國歷史向前推展的巨大動力;過去欣然嚮往清華大師輩出,轉身而為清華人,身負敎硏重任,而今正有心且持續付出心力為清華因緣接續更多的篇章,有所貢獻於清華的未來,實為清華幸。

Suber S. Huang, MD, MBA
Dr. Huang is CEO and Founder of the Retina Center of Ohio in
Cleveland, Ohio. He received training at Johns Hopkins University,
Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Albert Einstein
College of Medicine, Wilmer Eye Institute/Johns Hopkins, Bascom
Palmer Eye Institute/University of Miami, and Case Western Reserve
University (CWRU) Weatherhead School of Management. In 2017, he will
join BPEI/UM as a Voluntary Professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Huang is
internationally recognized as a specialist in the treatment of
retinal diseases and surgery. He is Chair, National Eye Health
Education Program, National Eye Institute/NIH; Associate Secretariat
Federal Affairs and Chair, Research, Regulatory, and Scientific
Affairs committee, AAO; AAO representative to USP, Chair, RV section
for the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology on-line Education
committee. He is the founding curator for the ASRS Retina Image Bank
(imagebank.asrs.org) which will surpass 1 million page views in
2017. His research focuses on diabetes, AMD, the Argus II retina
prosthesis, stem cells, epigenomics, and gene therapy for inherited
retinal disease.
Past positions include: President, American Society of Retina
Specialists; Philip F. and Elizabeth G. Searle – Suber Huang MD
Professor and Vice-Chair, CWRU; Director, Center for Retina and
Macular Disease University Hospitals Eye Institute; Founder of the
Retinal Diseases Image Analysis Reading Center; and President,
Cleveland Ophthalmological Society. Selected honors include senior
recognition awards from the ASRS and AAO, Secretariat Awards from
the AAO, J Donald M Gass, MD award from the OPS, National Diversity
Award, Attending of the Year, Best Doctors in America since 2003,
and the CWRU Humanism in Medicine award for his exemplary and
compassionate care of patients and their families.
