2016 was a year of firsts for us. After starting off normally with
one of Manchun’s seminars for high school students at Harvard
University in Boston, we flew to China in June for Richard to
present an award for the best animated film at the closing ceremony
of the Shanghai Film Festival. We also traveled to Beijing on the
200mph train to visit with friends, since we were “in the
neighborhood”.
Later we went to the “other east” to visit Richard’s mother, Helen,
who is still going strong at almost 93 years old, and other family
members in St. Louis.
Then Richard got the funding to recut his feature documentary for
the U.S. market.Photos and the trailer are at the website,
www.behind-bayonets-and-barbed-wire.com. The film opened on November
11, playing Los Angeles and New York, to be eligible for the Feature
Documentary Oscar. Though in limited release, the people who saw it
seemed to like it and some were brought to tears by the story of
American POWs, who wereinterned in China by the Japanese during
WWII. This is Richard’s first feature length directing credit in the
U.S.
Of course 2016 was also important for Manchun, our resident
politico. She supported Donald Trump early in the year by writing
editorials in the Chinese press and participating in debates to
support him. Later in the campaign, she traveled to battleground
states to drum up votes for the Republicans. After the previous
eight years of defeat, her hard work paid off on November 8th.
So both of us got a new start in November and are looking forward to
2017 to see what the next steps will be. We hope that you too will
have a happy holiday season with a wonderful new year of new and
enjoyable experiences.
