Name of Event: The Enduring Mystery of The Overlook and the Unsolved
Murder of William Lowe Rice
In August of 1910, William Lowe Rice, a founder of the now world
renowned law firm of Jones Day, was murdered walking home from a game
of golf. Not even Pinkerton Detectives could solve this crime.
Set against the backdrop of glorious Cleveland Heights in the early
1900s, this story of wealth, power and beautiful costumes rivals
Downton Abbey. Mr. Rice's widow went on to be presented at Court to
King George V in the 1920s.
A true “whodunit,” this mystery remains unsolved to this day.

About the Speaker:
Cynthia Marek Lundeen holds a U.S. Patent, is a speaker, author and
hat designer. A past first prize winner of The Kentucky Derby Hat
Contest, her work has been covered in The Washington Post, The
Cleveland Plain Dealer, The Erie Chinese Journal and HaTalk (U.K.)
among other media sources.
As a special feature of this program, and to celebrate the era, a
raffle will be held in which the winner may choose a couture hat made
by Cynthia for either a lady or a gentleman.
About The College Club of Cleveland
The College Club of Cleveland is housed in a Cleveland Heights
Historical Landmark Building. This structure was originally built in
1905 as a private home and was designed by noted architect Alfred Hoyt
Granger, who went on to design major train stations in Chicago. This
former private mansion is one of only three original homes remaining
on The Overlook.
