NOVELIST ANCHEE MIN FEATURED AT CLEVELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY’S WRITERS
& READERS SERIES
|
|
CLEVELAND,
OH – Acclaimed author and speaker Anchee Min will be featured as
part of Cleveland Public Library’s (CPL) Writers & Readers series on
Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 2:00 pm. in the Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium,
East 6th and Superior.
“We are honored to bring Anchee Min back to Cleveland Public
Library’s Writers and Readers series. Her passionately crafted,
thought provoking novels prompt readers to embrace historical
fiction in a fresh and profound way,” said Felton Thomas, executive
director of CPL.
Once treated as an outcast in China, Min endured many hardships
before arriving in the United States in 1984, where she taught
herself English by watching episodes of “Sesame Street.” Today, her
novels have received encouraging reviews from Booklist and The New
York Times Book Review. Red Azalea, Min’s frank memoir of growing up
in Communist China during the 1960s and ‘70s, was hailed in The New
York Times Book Review as a “powerful political as well as literary
statement” and was named one of the Notable Books for 1994. Her most
recent novel, Pearl of China, was released in 2010, and features the
historical figure of Nobel-prize winning author, Pearl S. Buck, as
the center of a story of friendship amidst violent civil war and
later Communist regime. A sought-after speaker, Min last visited CPL
in 2005. Photo credit: Naishi Min
