A-PoPhasis
A-PoPhasis is an Asian Hip Hop dance crew that originally consisted of?nine members, but is open to teaching as well as learning dances with other people. The name A-PoPhasis was chosen for more than one significance. Since we dance with an Asian Hip Hop style, the name A-PoPhasis is supposed to mean Asian Pop Phases. On the other hand, apophasis is an English rhetorical device that means "mentioning by not mentioning." In the young adult lives of the dance crew members, they go through many phases but, though not always explicitly mentioned, their lives center around dance. One wonderful aspect about this dance crew is that before the members formed a crew, they were all close friends who enjoyed dancing together. Because of the bond they formed beforehand, the collaboration between the members eased the process of synchronization. The debut of A-PoPhasis was on May 21, 2010 at Brecksville Broadview Heights High School, followed by a show on May 22, 2010 at the very first Cleveland Asian Festival. The dance crew focuses on South Korean Hip Hop songs and styles and blends in some American break dancing and Chinese pop genres. Gathering from Solon, Brecksville, Richfield, Twinsburg, and even Warren, the members practice on weekends in the basements of each other's homes. From simple techniques to back flips and head spins, the A-PoPhasis dance crew members experience the thrills of choreography and performances. The members of A-PoPhasis are not about being the best dance crew or the most well-known group, but they are about expressing their passion for dance and spreading the joy of dance to others. And in the process, they have grasped the concept of team effort and perpetually support each other -- like a family.
