CELEBRATING 45 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP
Exploring Chinese Culture through the Lens
of Ohio-Hubei Relations
By: Minru Li

China, a land steeped
in ancient wisdom, vibrant traditions, boundless diversity, and
rapid modernization, has long captivated the imaginations of people
around the world. The enduring friendship between Ohio and Hubei
Province stands as a testament to the transformative power of
cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Since the establishment
of sister relations in 1979, these two regions have cultivated
strong bonds founded on trust, cooperation, and shared values.
Through cultural exchanges, economic partnerships, and educational
collaborations, we have nurtured a friendship that transcends
borders and enriches the lives of our citizens.
Nestled in the heart of China, the Hubei Province boasts captivating
beauty and a rich cultural heritage. It is home to ancient marvels
such as the enigmatic burial site of Xiongjiazhong, an extraordinary
complex containing thousands of horses and chariots dating back to
the Chu State period, predating the Terracotta Army in Xi’an by a
couple of hundred years.
Additionally, Hubei is renowned for its ancient “chime bells,” a
traditional Chinese musical instrument with a history spanning over
2,000 years. In 2019, as we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the
friendship between Ohio and Hubei, three concerts titled “The
Imperial Bells of China: Chimes in Concert” enthralled audiences in
Ohio.
DRAGON BOAT RACING
Dragon boat racing is yet another example of Ohio-Hubei relations --
today, in Columbus, Ohio, dragon boat racing has emerged as a
cherished tradition. Interestingly, this event in China is also
steeped in legend and is connected to the story of Qu Yuan, a
revered figure born in Hubei.
As we commemorate this significant milestone in our
friendship, let us reaffirm our commitment to fostering
understanding and cooperation between Ohio and Hubei. Together, let
us continue to build bridges that strengthen the bonds of friendship
and pave the way for a brighter future.
