Saturday, June 24th, marked the one year anniversary of the
Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade the devastating
impact of state abortion bans is clear. More than 23 million women
in the US – one in three – live in one of the 18 states with an
abortion ban currently in effect. In nearly all these states,
doctors could be charged with a felony for simply doing their jobs.
In states like Texas, a doctor could be imprisoned for life for
performing an abortion. Women are being denied essential medical
care to preserve their health and save their lives. They’ve been
turned away from emergency rooms, forced to delay care, and made to
travel hundreds of miles for care.
In the face of these attacks, the Biden-Harris Administration is
committed to fighting for reproductive rights including by taking
meaningful executive action to protect access to reproductive health
care, that has:
* Ensured women receive the medical care they need in an emergency,
such as a miscarriage;
* Defended access to safe and effective medication abortion; and
* Strengthened privacy protections for patients and doctors.
The President and Vice President will continue to protect access to
reproductive health care and call on Congress to restore the
protections of Roe v. Wade in federal law once and for all.
