Rep. Brown Touts $1 Billion Investment in Great Lakes Restoration from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Shontel M. Brown (OH-11) touted the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) announcement that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s $1 billion investment in the Great Lakes will significantly accelerate progress in the restoration of some of the region’s most environmentally degraded sites.
“Lake Erie and our Great Lakes are critical to Northeast Ohio’s economy and to the countless Ohioans who rely on them for drinking water, work and leisure,” said Rep. Brown. “Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a $1 billion investment is on the way to accelerate and complete the clean-up of environmentally degraded areas across the Great Lakes region. This includes efforts to address historic contamination of the Cuyahoga River, improve its water quality, and restore its ecosystem. The Infrastructure Law’s investment will deliver health and economic benefits to our community and protect our Great Lakes for generations to come.”
The EPA will use most of the $1 billion investment in the Great Lakes to clean up and restore environmentally degraded sites, known as Areas of Concern (AOCs). According to the EPA, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding, along with annual congressionally appropriated funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, will enable the Agency to complete clean-up of most remaining AOCs, including the Cuyahoga River, by 2030.
This funding was authorized by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, signed into law by President Biden on November 15. Rep. Brown supported passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act on November 5.
