CLEVELAND, OHIO - Cecil Lipscomb, President and CEO of the United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland (UBF), announced today they will be sponsoring a high school robotics demonstration at this year’s FutureLAND conference on Friday, October 6th from 2-3:30 pm. In addition to a pitch competition this is the only high school session included in the conference that will feature two dynamic high school robotics teams, East Tech High School and Solon FTC Team, as they showcase their robots, King T’Challa and The Abundant Sheep in the lobby of the United Way of Greater Cleveland, 1331 Euclid Ave, a longtime partner of UBF. The teams are infusing robotics, education, and community to inspire career aspirations and technology education.
This event is in conjunction with FutureLAND, an annual two-day conference at Playhouse Square that aims to make Cleveland a tech hub by celebrating and championing diversity in technology, small business, art and culture throughout Northeast Ohio by establishing a diverse tech ecosystem in NE Ohio. FutureLAND is a collaborative effort between UBF, the City of Cleveland, and Jumpstart.
The aim of this robotics session, sponsored by UBF, is to provide continued STEM (science, technology, engineering & mathematics) exposure and support to students and communities of color, introducing and expanding their knowledge of technology. Lipscomb stated, "We are excited about the opportunity to bring two very diverse teams together to demonstrate how important it is that our Black, Brown and Asian communities have continued access and resources to prepare them for the future in technology that Northeast Ohio will provide."
Today's announcement is a clear indication of UBF's unwavering commitment to expanding and exposing our community to a wide range of opportunities that enhance their education and self-development. Twyla N. Turner, the Director of Program Resources at UBF and an alumna of East Tech High School, expressed her pride in bringing the East Tech Robotics team to FutureLAND. She emphasized the importance of providing access to technology and programs like these in our communities.
The United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland, Inc. is the only Black federated human service organization in Ohio. Since 1981, UBF's primary purpose has been to strengthen the capacity of organizations and agencies that serve African-American and impoverished communities by increasing their access to funding and resources. They provide grants that enable people who care to do the things that they care about.
