Erie Chinese Journal

20th Anniversary Celebration

The Erie Chinese Journal (ECJ), and publisher Ying (Anne) Pu celebrated 20 years of publication at the Cleveland City Hall on Friday March 24, 2023. To celebrate the largest regional Chinese-American newspaper, the event included a host of performers and guests from Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Philadelphia, with special speakers, and a delicious meal.
The Journal has been an invaluable resource for two decades that allows our community, particularly those that do not know English well, to stay connected and informed. It is also a great way for advertisers to reach out to the growing Chinese/Asian communities.
The celebration started with a traditional Tea Ceremony by Kimmily Qin, Jieyu Wang, and Sebastian Maj, followed by Zither played by Liting Fan. The hosts Ji Ping Zhang and Cynthia Marek Lundeen gave opening remarks and then Ariel Flores provided a rousing rendition of the National Anthem.
Entertainment included a Dragon Dance by Akron Stem, the Xiao Bo Drum Core, Face Changing Mask by Mark Zheng, Solo vocals by Ji Ping Zhang, Martial Arts demonstration by Sen Gao, and Traditional Chinese opera by Fei Hong Song. Dinner was then served by Classic Cuisine.
The Talk Show speakers were then introduced. Margaret Wong was introduced by Wayne Wong. Pier Lee was introduced by Susan Chang. And Ying Pu was introduced by her son, Frank Lu.
The three speakers, Ying Pu, Margaret Wong, and Pier Lee shared the stage as they also shared their immigration stories and journeys. Fitting for the celebration’s theme: “Dream of Home.” Where we or our families dreamt of making the US our Home and through perseverance and hard work, the dream is achieved not just for ourselves but for the growing community.
Congratulations, Erie Chinese Journal! Thank you, Ying Pu!
