MULTICULTURAL UNDERSTANDING !

Were you born in another country and came to America as an immigrant or refugee? What happened to you when you came to this country? Was a parent (or both) born in another country and you were born in America? What was it like being part of two or more cultures? Has your family been in America for many generations? What story do you want to tell that helps us understand your uniqueness as a human being?
The International Community Council-Worldwide Intercultural Network (ICC-WIN) is committed to enhancing cultural competence in Northeast Ohio and offering its HUMAN LIBRARY representing the people and cultures of this region. In small group sessions we will open the volumes in our library and provide you with opportunities to engage in dialogue with each storyteller. Ask questions about their cultures you have always wanted to ask. We believe that civil dialogue promotes understanding.
The Human Library? is a global innovative and hands-on learning platform. It is embedded in high school as well as higher learning, medical training as well as civic engagement to better our understanding of diversity in order to help create more inclusive and cohesive communities across cultural, religious, social and ethnic differences. In its education initiatives, the Human Library works to create a safe framework for personal conversations that can help to challenge prejudice, help rid discrimination, prevent conflicts and contribute to greater human cohesion across social, religious and ethnic divisions.
The ICC-WIN “HUMAN LIBRARY”
Our “Human Library” is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. The ICC-WIN Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers, that is, participants in the sessions. It is a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.
“Don’t judge a book by its cover!”
ICC-WIN has a very large “book shelf” with several hundred volumes! From our beginnings in 1993, we have engaged the diverse peoples and their cultures in arts and culture activities including but not limited to annual Folk Festivals, presentations by heads of international consulates, community-based event, annual       International Cleveland EXPO, and our “World in Your Backyard” series. Each person who has been part of our work is a separate volume representing great diversity within each culture as well as among the cultures. They have shared their stories and talents before both small and large groups. Each time, participants have come away with an enhanced cultural awareness.
NOTE: This series is focused on open dialogue without judgments by the participants. We are happy to collaborate with The Human Library? or “Menneskebiblioteket” as it is called in Danish, created in Copenhagen in the spring of 2000 by Ronni Abergel and his brother Dany and colleagues Asma Mouna and Christoffer Erichsen. We have much to learn from their 22-year history of supporting open dialogue.
