Happy Lunar New Year!
From the APIAVote family to yours, we wish you and your loved ones a
wonderful Lunar New Year!
Lunar New Year is celebrated in China and much of Asia, including Korea,
Vietnam, and Malaysia, as well as the global Asian diaspora. The
holiday has several origin stories, depending on the country, but
the holiday has always been a time for celebrating the new year,
seeing loved ones, feasting, and honoring ancestors.
Lunar New Year falls on the second new moon after the Winter Solstice,
and is usually celebrated for multiple days. Every culture
celebrates Lunar New Year in their own unique way, with different
kinds of foods and traditions that symbolize prosperity, abundance
and togetherness. One such tradition is giving red envelopes, known
as “hong bao” in Mandarin, with money to young children by elders.
Celebrants may also wear red or display red and gold decorations —
colors that denote good fortune.
2022 is the Year of the Tiger. It is said those born in the Year of
the Tiger tend to be brave, strong-willed, pioneering, outspoken,
playful, enthusiastic, and fearless.
As we usher in the new year, we are hopeful and looking forward to
building on the progress we made in 2020 and 2021 and continue
working to empower and mobilize our Asian and Pacific Islander
communities in electoral and civic participation. |
