Tonight We have 25 of Cleveland’s very very best citizens from all
sorts of different groups and ethnic organizations. We‘re here to
celebrate the birthday of our special friend in Cleveland, Miss
Giahoa Ryan the Director of the Friendship foundation. She is from
Vietnam was an interpreter over there for the US military She
married a man in Aviation and was stationed on a small island in the
South Pacific called Guam and later came to Cleveland 1971 Giahoa is
actually one of the oldest Vietnamese residents here in our city and
one of the oldest ethnic leaders from Vietnam since 71. She has
helped many Vietnamese resettle here and her own family. She helped
over 40 people, children and adults to be able to come here and
become US citizens. Right now her big project of the friendship
foundation in the United States is to build a cultural garden. This
will be joining the other 40 cultural gardens on Martin Luther King
Blvd. near the Cleveland art museum in the sky gardens are meant to
celebrate the history of human traditions and arts of a particular
country we have 40 them now like Poland, Ireland, Italy etc. The
Vietnam Garden has seven different statues that are commissioned in
Vietnam by Vietnamese artist made out of white marble. People may
not realize it but Vietnam has beautiful marble places where you can
collect the marble used for art or architecture. The white marble
come from Marble Mountain and the seven different statues are being
made including a statue of a Vietnamese lady shown in the center of
the garden celebrating women from all over the world and the statue
that weighs 25 pounds is 14 feet tall so everybody will be invited
this year 2022 to the grand opening of the entire garden with all
those statues over in Vietnam. By the way Giahoa Ryan is now
building her eighth school over in Vietnam. So here tonight we’ve
got a nice dinner celebrating her birthday and all of the people
from Cleveland are having a wonderful meal at the Saigon restaurant
run by Mr. Bon Thai’ and Nhung Vo. We recommend everybody to come
enjoy Vietnamese cuisine at the Saigon restaurant , the food is
wonderful and very fresh.

I will never forget Christmas 2014 my friend Andrea Cato and I
crashed a Christmas party at the Saigon Plaza on Detroit. It was
Miss Giahoa Ryan's annual Christmas party and that was the same
night I had met my good friend Pierre Benjani. When I met Giahoa I
was awe struck at how beautiful and gracious she was. When she
showed me pictures of her beloved Vietnam and told her story I asked
if I could do her documentary, it was a rich story and I wanted to
help her get it on film, she agreed. Although we have not tackled
the documentary yet we did become friends. It wasn't until years
later though, 2019 I think. She needed a little help with the garden
and I thought it was a worthy assignment especially since she was
also honoring all the military that helped Vietnam. Funny thing is
when we became friends I had learned that she was stationed on Guam
10 years after we were. My Dad got orders there in 1960 and my
little brother was born there. What a small island and small
world...Can hardly wait until the Marble Lady arrives to make
Giahoa's vision come true. We will be there...thank you Giahoa and
The Friendship Foundation for all of your hard work and dedication.
You have helped so very many children and their children rise above
through your 8 schools so they may have, not to mention all the
people you helped reach the shores of America...God bless and save
you...Happy Birthday Sis...love always….
