After 16 Years of Service, Mayor Frank G. Jackson Announces He Will Not Seek Re-Election

View the micro-doc that debuted today during his announcement Mayor Jackson took his oath of office on Jan. 2, 2018, for a historic fourth term – which makes him the City of Cleveland’s longest serving mayor. During his tenure as mayor, he has advocated for building equity and opportunity for all Clevelanders while improving the condition of the City’s many diverse neighborhoods. From the Great Recession to the current pandemic, Mayor Jackson has led the City through tough times. He has also led the City through significant events from the Republican National Convention in 2016 to national sporting events like the MLB All-Star Game and NFL Draft. Through it all, he has been a voice for all those he represents no matter their background.    “For over 31 years, from being a city councilman of Ward 5, to being council president and now mayor, you, the people of the city of Cleveland have worked alongside me for change and to create a better quality of life for all of our citizens,” said Mayor Jackson. “Together we have accomplished many, many things.” A lifelong resident of the Central Neighborhood, Mayor Jackson began his career in elected office first as a city councilman, representing the ward in which he still lives. Later, Mayor Jackson became city council president before running for mayor and assuming office in 2006. He is a graduate of Cleveland Public Schools, Cuyahoga Community College and Cleveland State University – the latter from which he earned his bachelor’s, master’s, law degree and bestowed an honorary doctorate. He began his public service career as an assistant city prosecutor in the Cleveland Municipal Court Clerk’s Office. Leveraging Public-Private Partnerships    Mayor Jackson has moved Cleveland forward with effective leadership and an invaluable ability to see and embrace the city’s unique challenges. Across all sectors from public to private to the philanthropic, Mayor Jackson has built and sustained the relationships that make Cleveland a better city for all. This is perhaps best illustrated by the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative. In conjunction with local financial institutions, community development corporations and non-profits, the Mayor was able to secure funds for programming ranging from a retail incubator, small business loans, educational advancement opportunities including a coding bootcamp and more. In total, $65 million was secured by the City and private entities to improve five target neighborhoods on the east and west sides identified by the Mayor for significant reinvestment. Reforming Cleveland’s Schools    Among his greatest educational achievements in office is the creation of the Transformation Alliance, aimed at bolstering accountability in Cleveland’s public schools and improving the test scores of its diverse student population. Another more recent important achievement is the launch of Say Yes to Education in Cleveland, a national initiative aimed at providing college scholarships to graduating seniors who have participated in its renowned program. Balancing the City Budget Every Single Year    Since his first term in office, Mayor Jackson has presented balanced budgets for the City of Cleveland during recessions and even the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic. Year over year, he has relied on fiscally disciplined governance including 15 years of balanced budgets aimed at making a more equitable Cleveland. Citizens rallied behind these efforts by passing an operating levy in 2012 - the first in 14 years - and its renewal in 2016 as well as a capital levy in 2014. Making Our Neighborhoods Safer    During his tenure as Mayor, Mayor Jackson has led initiatives that have made Cleveland neighborhoods safer and stronger. Safe Smart CLE – an initiative which has allowed the City to upgrade street lights by installing LED and camera technology – helps improve the quality of public safety in Cleveland while also making the City greener. In addition, the Mayor sought the assistance of the Department of Justice to enter in a consent decree aimed at reviewing and improving the Cleveland Division of Police.
